Program Objectives

As stated in IFPHK’s ESG statement, ESG policy is anchored in ESG promotion. Therefore, IFPHK is committed to promoting ESG education, disseminating its advantages, and increasing awareness among its members and pertinent business professionals. We want to develop our ESG practices and raise the professional standards of financial planners in Hong Kong and Asia by leveraging academic research and industry knowledge in ESG area.


This course is designed to provide latest knowledge in investment management with a focus on ESG integration. Major topics include development of ESG integration, green finance, investment analysis of ESG integration, drivers for ESG integration, UNPRI concepts, regulatory framework, and common ESG integration approaches. This subject employs a dynamic learning approach combining physical lecture, online training with assessments and discussions with senior ESG professionals to enhance the learning experience of the students.

Professor Cheng is a Dr. S H Ho Professor of Banking and Finance at the Hang Seng University of Hong Kong. He is a member of the Investment Committee of the Hospital Authority Provident Fund Scheme in which he leads the effort in promoting ESG integration for an investment portfolio of about USD 8.74bil (as of March 2020). Dr. Cheng actively engages in ESG and green finance research. In addition to publishing on Green Bond, he received various research donation and grants related to ESG and financial services for a total exceeding HKD8mil.


Before joining Hang Seng University, he was Professor of Finance and Director of Economic Sustainability and Entrepreneurial finance at PolyU. From 1989 to 1998, he was an Assistant Professor and then Associate Professor at Murray State University in Kentucky. In 2003, he served as the HSBC Fellow at the University of Exeter in UK. Moreover, he has more than 90 articles published in research journals including the Journal of Finance. Professor Cheng is an author of Fundamentals of Financial Planning, and the lead author of Financial Planning and Wealth Management: An International Perspective, both by McGrawHill.

Chris is the Chairman of IFPHK and a CFP professional. And Chris is currently Head of ETF Client Advisory at Mirae Asset Global Investments and is responsible in developing regional institutional business platform as well as offering Global X ETF solutions to sovereign wealth funds, pensions and endowments.


Chris is a subject matter expert in designing and offering index/sustainable investment solutions to the investment community throughout his tenure since 2010 with top 3 leading global ESG/Climate Change research/data providers, namely MSCI, FTSE Russell anAd Nasdaq Indexes that are leading. He worked closely with asset owners and other public-sector investment entities in their asset allocation and sustainable investment strategy implementation processes.
